This program
started in 1994 when an Edmonton
police officer with a shaved head
posed for a picture with a young
cancer patient.
The officer wanted
to support the boy, who was being
ridiculed at school because of his
hair loss. Other officers joined in
and shaved their heads.
Since then
police officers from across Canada
have held
Cops for Cancer
fundraising events for the Canadian
Cancer Society. Cops both men and
women agree to have their heads
shaved at a public place such as
shopping malls or city hall squares.
The police officers gather pledges
from co-workers, friends and family.
Cops for
Cancer is still going strong. Today
the program includes head shaves,
coin collections, golf tournaments,
BBQs, softball tournaments, ironman
teams, road races and other events
across the country.
Congratulations
and thanks to all those who have
participated in this event. Together
you have helped to raise over $20
million dollars in the fight against
cancer!
